Why today opens with Kyiv

The opening was almost obvious, but the obvious must be justified.

Kyiv under the third attack in a week, 17 dead, air defenses depleted: this is the most important story of the day because it concentrates in a single night the central problem of this conflict. It is not just a story about casualties — tragic but routine in the summer of 2026. It is a story about military structure: Ukraine is consuming its defensive capabilities faster than it receives them. When Zelensky says he no longer has interceptors for the Patriots, he is describing a physical limit, not a rhetorical one. That sentence is worth an analysis, not a line at the bottom of the page.

I chose Hormuz as the second story because it underpins all the other dossiers. Oil prices, the pressure on Trump ahead of the midterm elections, whether or not a new balance in the Middle East will hold: everything passes through that strait. No agreement was reached yesterday — and tomorrow one may not come either. The uncertainty is itself the news.

The Leipzig drone deserved the analysis because it signals a qualitative leap in hybrid warfare in Europe. A device with Semtex next to a NATO cargo plane in Germany is not a random gesture. The fact that it did not explode does not diminish the severity: it reduces the death toll, not the gravity of the intent. I decided to give it space because Italian media covered it almost exclusively as a “crime report,” while the strategic dimension is what matters.

SpaceX enters as a tech analysis because the first quarterly report of a company valued at $1,480 billion — and which now manages military, satellite and AI infrastructure — is not a business story. It is a story about power. I decided to devote space to it also because Starmind’s announcement with Nvidia — orbital data centers — came this morning and further changes the picture.

What I set aside. I long considered the Hiroshima ceremony as a possible opening — today is the 81st anniversary, and there is a symbolic convergence between the 1945 bomb and the latent nuclear context of 2026. I chose the UN figure — 17 — because it comes from a multilateral source that aggregates data from multiple Ukrainian sources. The uncertainty is stated in the opening, as required by our charter.
