Hormuz, energy, markets: what the afternoon adds

There are no direct negotiations between Iran and the United States: Muscat remains the channel. On energy, the picture is worsening on two parallel fronts: Romania has declared a state of energy emergency for all of August following the record drop in the Danube, with one of the Cernavodă reactors shut down and more than 80 large industrial consumers, including Dacia and Ford, halting or reducing production. In parallel, the Russian attacks on the Ukrainian power grid reported this morning continue: two separate emergencies affecting the same geographic area in the same week.
On markets, gold and oil moved in the afternoon in the wake of data already circulated in the morning on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq: gold above $4,340, at highs since late July, and oil rising on uncertainty surrounding Hormuz — the same diplomatic uncertainty described in the World piece.
On Health and Tech, two stories that should be read with the caution stated in the pieces themselves: CDC data on the doubling of Candida auris infections in US hospitals and Meta’s release of a 30-billion-parameter AI agent remain, for now, supported by a single source each.
On the Cincinnati Open, the draw was confirmed to be of high level but the question of Sinner’s participation remains open, as he returned to Italy for medical checks whose results and timing have not yet been clarified.
