Oil, migrants, quakes: the afternoon updates three fronts

The afternoon confirms the line opened this morning on oil: Wti remains above $83 a barrel after new threats from US President Donald Trump against Iran, with gas up 3.39 percent. The tension coexists with an opposite signal — a Pakistani leak about an ongoing negotiation between Washington and Tehran — which helps European stock markets move into positive territory. Neither piece of news cancels out the other: energy markets and equity markets are simply pricing in different information on the same day, which is what we wrote this morning.

Compared to the morning, today we are updating three fronts. The first is the geopolitical-economic one just described, expanded with a second piece focusing on the Strait of Hormuz and the sequence of verbal pressure and negotiating openings from the American administration toward Iran. The second is the Ceuta migration crisis: the interior ministers of the 27 met in an extraordinary session at the request of 22 member states, with Italy and Denmark taking the lead; France and Portugal are not among the signatories of the letter.
