Coppa Italia, Mantova knocks Lazio out and four more round-of-32 matches are being played today

On August 16, Lazio was eliminated from the Coppa Italia at the round of 32, beaten 2-0 at the Olimpico by Mantova, a Serie B side. The goals came from Ruocco with a quarter of an hour left and from Cajazzo in stoppage time (ANSA; Sky Sport).

The result has two verifiable contextual elements. The first: Lazio reached the final in last year’s edition of the tournament, and this year is knocked out in its very first available match. The second: it was Gennaro Gattuso’s official debut match on the Lazio bench, in which he had to do without, among others, Romagnoli, Tavares, Isaksen, Cataldi, Gigot and Patric. The coach described the result as “a hammering.”

The format that makes the elimination possible

The last of the four has a direct consequence on the bracket: the winner of Palermo-Lecce will face Mantova in the round of 16. Three of the four scheduled matches pit teams from the two top professional divisions against each other — Pisa-Empoli, Sassuolo-Cesena, Cremonese-Sampdoria — and the choice of kick-off times, with two matches in the late afternoon and two in the evening, spreads the round across a single day rather than splitting it up.
