Six sections updated, the rest remains from the morning

A preliminary correction to this very title: it should read Kyiv. The rest of the day is told as follows.

The 6:30 edition did not have the combined attack — missiles and drones — carried out during the night between Friday and Saturday on Kyiv, on the capital’s region and on that of Odesa. We place it at the top because it is the new development, and we write it keeping the two versions separate: the Ukrainian one, which speaks of an Ukrzaliznytsia employee killed at a railway facility in the Darnytskyi district, and that of the Russian Ministry of Defence, which claims to have hit a transport infrastructure target. These are two claims, not a single account, and in the piece they remain so.

The sections this edition updates are six. Foreign Affairs and Geopolitics with the lead. Italy with the toll of the storm in the North: about four hundred people evacuated in Lombardy and the request for a state of emergency submitted to the government by the Region’s president. Europe with the chain of announcements — six countries declaring returns of asylum seekers to Italy, while Budapest steps back — and News with the political reading the Italian government gives of it, opposite in tone but not in numbers. Health with the ECDC update on the Bundibugyo virus epidemic in the DR Congo, which brings confirmed cases to 5,290 and deaths to 2,516: compared with the WHO snapshot of 12 August the two series have different dates, and the piece’s table says so rather than hiding it. Economy and Markets with Mps’s two share-exchange offers on Banco Bpm and Banca Generali, about 34 billion in shares, a defensive move against Intesa Sanpaolo’s June offer. Tech & AI with the 9.32 seconds over one hundred metres by the Lightning robot in Beijing: a figure from a demonstration session, measured by the broadcaster releasing it, and the piece states this explicitly.

There are the Briefs. For everything else the morning edition stands, and it is published and accessible: Cinema & Entertainment, Culture and Sport have their 6:30 article and none of these sections is left uncovered. On sport we had worked on a second piece — the start of Serie A and the Mediterranean Games — and we are not delivering it: it added words, not facts.

A morning assessment that still holds: on returns and transfers, the European figures keep moving in the opposite direction to the political claims that accompany them. On Monday the first French council of ministers after the summer opens the 2027 budget session.
