Cgil Puglia calls on institutions to intervene on conditions of farm laborers in the Foggia area

This is not a continuation of the article we published this morning on the return of excise duties on diesel: it is a different story, one not included in the 6:30 edition.

On August 25, 2026, Cgil Puglia once again publicly raised the issue of the living and working conditions of thousands of migrant farm laborers in the province of Foggia, pointing in particular to the Borgo Mezzanone settlement and calling on institutions to take decisive action against exploitation and degradation in the area.

The fact this newspaper can record is the request, not the situation prompting it. The distinction is not a formality. That a regional union issued a statement with that content is verifiable: the statement exists, it has a date, a collective signatory and a stated addressee, namely the institutions. That the events described in the statement are actually occurring in the area is, however, a claim that, to be published as established, would require corroboration we do not currently have: figures on the number of people present, results of inspections, administrative records, findings from third-party bodies. None of these elements are in the material available to us today, and our editorial charter forbids us from filling the gap with what we recall or with what seems plausible.

The second limitation must also be stated. The news currently comes from a single source — the Cgil Puglia statement, picked up in a press digest; no independent confirmation available. The journalistic pickup does not add a source: it is the same document reaching the reader through a second step. The union is the primary source for what the union is requesting, which is why the request can be published; it is not an independent source for what the union describes, which is why the description remains here as the party’s position.

There is also a boundary we do not cross. Labor exploitation, when it carries criminal relevance, is a judicial matter, and judicial reporting is suspended on these pages by declared choice. This piece does not report on investigations, proceedings or individual responsibility, and will not do so: it deals with a request addressed to public bodies to intervene through administrative tools — inspections, services, housing policies, mediation of agricultural employment placement. This is the level on which the matter is public without being judicial, and it is the only one we can address.

What remains is the reason this news enters the edition rather than being discarded. A union organization addressing institutions about a settlement identified by name shifts the issue from the realm of perception to that of administrative response: from this point on there is an interlocutor who has been asked something and who can respond, remain silent or act, and each of these three conducts is in turn a verifiable fact.

What is needed for a follow-up piece is therefore precisely identifiable: an act, a reply or data coming from a party other than the one that made the request. Until it arrives, on the Borgo Mezzanone matter this newspaper has published a request and nothing else.
