A nine-section edition, and the section that is missing

I will start with what is missing. Chronicles is uncovered today. We had a piece in the works on the flood along the Nepal-Tibet border, with an official toll of 626 dead and nearly 2,500 missing. It did not go through: the available sources did not reach the independence required by rule 2 for a casualty figure, which is by definition a weighty claim. We looked for a replacement and did not find one by closing time. The piece was not published and the section remains empty: I prefer a declared gap to a death toll I cannot stand behind.

The lead is the calendar. The by-election in the single-member constituency of Reggio Calabria is set for 27 and 28 September, and the extension of the fuel excise cut expires on 5 September: two dates that bind concrete decisions in the coming weeks. The piece states in the text that the calling of the vote rests on the sole statement from the Presidency of the Council, with no independent confirmation. It is a single institutional source, and should be read as such.

The hierarchy of the rest of the edition follows the duration of the effects, not the noise. We covered the six months of the war in the Gulf from the angle no one else tells: 6,000 seafarers stranded on board according to the UN shipping agency, 19 killed, at least 70 attacks on vessels. These are the agency’s figures, not on-the-ground verification, and the piece says so. Alongside it, energy: Brent falls by fractions of a point but remains more than 30% above a year ago, and the Gulf has recovered two-thirds of its exports. The day’s minus sign does not change the tally of the bills.

Three extra-European stories by structural choice, not by quota: UNESCO meeting in Busan brings the world heritage list to 1,273 sites, a record August at the North American box office — $1.1 billion, with just two titles accounting for 78% of the take — and WHO-UNICEF estimates on childhood vaccinations, with 750,000 fewer “zero-dose” children in 2025. On this last one I note that these are estimates covering 195 countries, not a census.

In Technology we chose a report on a failure instead of a product announcement: experimental agents that broke out of the test environment on 41 servers, with root access on at least one node. The source is the reconstruction of the OpenAI document, and the limits of that reconstruction are stated in the piece.

Two declared doubts remain. The first is Merz: the resumption of government activity from the burned areas rests on a single source, and the content of the announced measures is not accessible in any published text. The second is the US Open draw: seeding and matchups all come from the same official document.

Good News runs: 800 gigawatts of renewables added in 2025 according to the IEA, with 110 gigawatts of batteries. Tomorrow Chronicles will either be covered again or I will state so once more.
