The Issue That Could Not Be Published This Morning

This morning this newspaper appeared with its editorial declaring one section uncovered: Cronache. The reason was the count of victims from the flood wave at the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region. A death toll is, by statute, a heavy claim, and at 6:30 it did not rest on sufficiently independent sources. By the afternoon the picture of sources had changed, and the lead of this edition reports what the Nepalese police have announced: more than 600 dead in Nepal and around 2,500 missing across the two countries. This is the most recent verifiable figure at the time of publication, and it is not a downward revision of anything we had already written: this morning we had written nothing.

What is new as of 16:30. Cronache, with the lead. Economy and Markets: the morning’s assessment of Kevin Warsh’s remarks at Jackson Hole held up on the level of rate expectations, but the August 28 session closed lower and gold lost 3.4% — the direction of the markets was not what the sole earnings report expected had suggested. Tech & AI, with the integration between Salesforce and Anthropic and a survey finding no effects on productivity. Sport, which in the morning looked at the US Open and in the afternoon shifts to the Monte Carlo draw. Europe, with the French citizens’ assembly on climate — announced, not yet begun, and from a single source: we say so in the piece. World, with the US announcement of an oil agreement over Caracas, whose terms remain unverifiable. Culture, with the public phase of the Franciscan centenary in Assisi.
