Two sections uncovered, and why

Today’s lead story is the sequence between September 1 and 2 in the Strait of Hormuz: the U.S. strikes announced by Donald Trump, the suspension of operations reported by Centcom, the Iranian announcement of a response operation against American bases and interests in the region. This is an ongoing story, and we state as much in the piece: the figures and phases are those verifiable at the time of publication, not a final tally. No independent verification of the targets struck is currently available; statements remain attributed statements.

Below, the hierarchy is built on what has verifiable consequences. Berlin attributes to Russia the explosive drone found on August 4 in the security area of Leipzig/Halle and announces diplomatic countermeasures: here the attribution is a government’s, and we treat it as such. In Nepal and on the Tibetan side, the flooding of the Bhote Koshi has surpassed one thousand deaths, with nearly four thousand reports of missing persons: in the piece we explain why that second figure is not a count of people, but of reports, and how the bulletin changes hour by hour. From the OECD comes data that contradicts itself: unemployment at 4.9% in May and participation at 76.7%, with the organization simultaneously signaling a weakening of the labor market.

For Italy, we chose the Senate: three amendments from the majority against nearly seven hundred from the opposition on the electoral law. It is the ratio between the numbers that says something about the strategy, not the substance of the texts, which for the most part is not known. Closing out: Taranto — 187 Italian medals two days before the end of the Mediterranean Games, seven short of the Bari 1997 record — the opening of Venice 83 with “Ink” by Danny Boyle in competition, and the bicentennial of the Blue Grotto in Capri. On this last item we state it within the piece: single source, no independent confirmation.

Two sections today remain without an article. Health: we had in the works a piece on the Ebola Bundibugyo emergency between Congo and Uganda; the available data did not meet the threshold of rule 17 and on this section we prefer emptiness to doubt. Tech & AI: the opening of generative artificial intelligence to three million Pentagon employees did not pass verification of independent sources. Neither was replaced. We did, however, discard, and then replace, a piece on Xi Jinping’s visit to Cairo: Foreign Affairs is covered.

In Controluce we look at Nicaragua, where the reform moving elections to 2028 has been approved on first reading and requires a second legislature, scheduled for January 18, 2027: a step that part of the coverage omits.
