Sanctions, the figures and the missing sources

The story of the day came in after 6:30 and from a place no one was watching: Wicklow, in Ireland, where the Union’s Foreign Ministers gathered in informal session. There, High Representative Kaja Kallas said that measures against a further 1,600 individuals and companies linked to the Russian military-industrial complex are being prepared, and on the same day she summoned the Russian envoy to the Union to Brussels; France, Finland and Belgium summoned their respective ambassadors. This is the opening of this edition.

What we have updated since the morning. Health, which this morning was declared unresolved because the figures on the Congolese epidemic did not hold up to verification: by the afternoon the story stands on the text of the WHO Director-General’s remarks at the Geneva briefing of September 1, with reported cases exceeding 6,000. This morning’s gap has been closed, and it should be noted that it was closed later and with more sources, not fewer. Two pieces come out today with an admission at the top. OpenAI’s statement about its own Astra model reaching the “Critical” threshold of its own evaluation framework comes from the company that is also the subject of the story: no external reviewer, no authority in the file. The Spanish extension of checks on passengers arriving from Italy comes from a single newsroom, and on an administrative act cross-checking — decree, ordinance, notification — is the bare minimum. Publishing while saying so is better than not publishing; it is not the same as publishing with two independent origins, and the reader must be able to tell the difference at a glance.
