Meloni government breaks longevity record: 1,413 days since taking office

3 September 2026 is the date on which the count changes hands at the top. The executive led by Giorgia Meloni, sworn in on 22 October 2022, reaches 1,413 days since taking office today and overtakes the second Berlusconi government in the ranking for effective duration since 1948, according to calculations by Pagella Politica.

The same reconstruction sets out the terms of the comparison, which is closer than the headline suggests: as of 31 August the incumbent executive counted 1,410 effective days, while the second Berlusconi government totalled 1,409 in full standing, to which three days spent as a caretaker are added.

Why the criterion matters

The distinction between “effective” days and “caretaker” days is not an accounting detail: it changes the ranking. A government that resigns remains formally in office to handle ordinary business, but without full political functions. Counting those days too, the margin between the two executives narrows further; counting only full days, the overtaking occurs today.

It is the kind of record that lends itself to two opposite readings, both legitimate. The first: legislative stability as the outcome of a numerically solid majority. The second: the historically short average lifespan of Italian governments, which makes a record of an experience lasting under four years. Neither reading can be drawn from the numbers alone.

The celebration

The political event is scheduled for the day after the record. On 4 September, at the Terminal Crociere of the port of Bari, the prime minister is expected to speak at 19.20; organisers indicate more than 5,000 accredited attendees through the Fratelli d’Italia website and more than seventy buses booked, StrettoWeb reports, based on BiDiMedia’s calculations and the event programme.

The attendance figures come from the organisers: they are a projection from one side, not a measured figure. The distinction always holds, even when the number is plausible.

What we don’t know

We do not know the primary source of the official count of government days: the two reconstructions used are journalistic calculations based on public data, not an institutional register. We do not know whether the criterion adopted — full days, with caretaker days counted separately — is the one used by all the other rankings in circulation: differences in method on this point can shift the order of the top positions.
