Italy — Mattarella writes to the Ambrosetti forum on power politics — The President of the Republic sent a message to the Ambrosetti forum in Cernobbio in which he points to Europe as an alternative model to conflicts: “Power politics and conflicts bring no benefit.” The text is reported by the Tg Politico Parlamentare of the DIRE agency on the basis of a Quirinale statement: the only source available, no independent confirmation.

Foreign Affairs and Geopolitics — Israel announces the killing of a Nukhba commander in Khan Younis — The Israel Defense Forces announced on September 4 that they had killed in an airstrike carried out on Wednesday in Khan Younis, in the south of the Strip, Mohammad Mahmoud Marshad al-Qadi, identified as a company commander of the Nukhba Force. According to the announcement, the man led the assault on the Sufa outpost on October 7, 2023. The account is that of the Israeli military, distributed by Italpress, and has not been verified by independent sources.

Economy and Markets — Eurozone inflation rises to 3.3% in August — The preliminary estimate published by Eurostat on September 1 puts the eurozone’s annual inflation at 3.3%, up 0.4 points from July’s 2.9%; energy rose 14.3% year on year and Italy is listed at 3.2%. Culture — A fragment of the Iliad among an Egyptian mummy’s bandages — At El-Bahnasa, ancient Oxyrhynchus, about 245 kilometers south of Cairo, a mission from the University of Barcelona and the Institute for the Ancient Near East found a papyrus of the Iliad among the bandages of a Roman-era mummy; according to the excavators it is the first attestation of the Homeric poems in an Egyptian funerary context. Sport — Club football resumes in Palestine and Gaza — The Palestinian football federation set September 4 as the resumption of club activities, halted for nearly three years because of the war. The first competition is the “Cup of the Thousand Martyrs,” named after the more than 1,000 Palestinian athletes killed according to federation data, with more than 200 teams: 146 from the West Bank, 44 from Gaza and 36 from refugee camps in Lebanon. Film & Entertainment — The Emmys get underway with the two Creative Arts evenings — The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards includes the Creative Arts Emmys on September 5 and 6 and the main ceremony on September 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, broadcast live on NBC and streamed on Peacock at 8 p.m. ET. Number of the Day — 800 gigawatts of renewables added in a year — In 2025, annual additions of renewable capacity worldwide hit a record 800 gigawatts, 75% of it solar. On This Day — In 2002 ‘Oasis’ brought Lee Chang-dong to the Venice podium — At the 59th Venice Film Festival, Lee Chang-dong’s ‘Oasis’ won five awards, including Best Director and the Best Emerging Actress award for Moon So-ri.
