Two tariffs, an epidemic and a technical note: why we open this way

We open with trade because it is the story with the most solid numbers and the widest consequences. The Canadian counter-tariffs in force since September 8 are worth 27.6 billion dollars in U.S. imports with rates at 15, 25 and 50 percent, and the source is Ottawa’s Ministry of Finance: a public document, not a reconstruction. The import ban announced in Washington has a date, September 29, and that date is why the story is in first position today and not in three weeks.

Below, three Italian stories that are three different ways of looking at government: the Taranto table suspended for two hours and then resumed, the Senate committee closing on the electoral law without a mandate to the rapporteur, the orange alert over eleven regions. On the former Ilva we immediately flag the limit: the suspension is reported by union sources, and in the piece it is attributed as such. On the electoral law the fact is the procedure, not the commentary: the closure without a mandate moves everything to the floor.

PISA appears twice, and not out of laziness. In the analysis there are the data — 760,000 students, 91 countries, France at its lowest score, one in three fifteen-year-old Germans below the threshold. In Counterlight there is how the same report was told in France and in Germany with different verbs. These are two distinct pieces of work: one on the numbers, one on the narrative of the numbers. Of the French part we state that it rests on a single origin, the OECD report picked up by several outlets.

Three doubts remain open. The first: the twenty missiles reported by Jordanian air defense come from a single origin, a state agency picked up by German public broadcasting. No independent confirmation, and in the piece we say so before the numbers. The second: on GPT-6 “Astra” the benchmark results are claims from the seller of the product; the only non-promotional element is the admission, in the technical documentation, of reduced readability in the model’s reasoning. The third: the Bundibugyo virus epidemic in the DR Congo, 6,686 confirmed cases and 3,226 deaths according to the ECDC update on Congolese data as of September 6. It is a rising toll, and for the Health section the narrowest perimeter applies: data, institutional sources, no guidance to anyone.

Nothing was discarded in production and no section is uncovered. Culture, Cinema and Sport look outside Europe as much as within it: Toronto opening on the 10th with a market, Busan now qualifying for the Oscars, the Flushing Meadows quarterfinals.
