A claim, a seven-day decree and a record month

We open with Hormuz knowing that we are publishing a claim, not an assessment. The numbers circulating — U.S. ships hit, tankers targeted — come from the party declaring it acted and are reported by one outlet. In today’s material there is no independent count confirming or reducing them, and there is no U.S. version. They remain in the lead because the relevant fact is that a claim of this scale has been made, not because the figures are verified. If denials or confirmations arrive, their place is the 4:30 PM edition.

The hierarchy below the lead follows a simple logic: what has a tangible impact. Crude oil above one hundred dollars and U.S. diesel at five-month highs explain why the Italian government convened an emergency Council of Ministers lasting twelve minutes to extend the 17-cent discount. Seven days: until September 17, with the excise duty reduced to 532.90 euros per thousand liters under the decree that entered into force today. Two separate pieces, one on the political decision and one on the text in the Official Gazette, because they are two different things and yesterday we had reported the announcement when the date was not yet set.

On the European Central Bank’s rate hike to 2.50% and the upward-revised growth estimates, we record the figures and the reason stated by the bank. We do not say what someone with a mortgage should do: that is not our job.

The most delicate piece of the day concerns the fire at a school in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Two independent sources give two different tolls — one attributed to local authorities, the other preceded by “at least.” We have not reconciled them nor chosen the higher figure: both remain, with their sourcing. The victims are students, and for this reason the piece contains no element that could make them identifiable.
