The jury chaired by Mary Beard has published the prize's initial selection: it includes two winners from past editions and one former finalist, but also ten authors never previously selected, three of them first-time novelists.
A story the morning news did not cover: the jury of the Booker Prize 2026 has announced the prize’s initial selection, thirteen novels chosen from 163 titles submitted. The jury is chaired by classicist Mary Beard, alongside poet Raymond Antrobus, musician Jarvis Cocker, Rebecca Liu and Patricia Lockwood.
The prize’s scope is defined by a rule of calendar and territory: eligible are novels published in the United Kingdom and/or Ireland between October 1, 2025 and September 30, 2026.
At the moment the news comes from a single source: the statement from the Booker Prize Foundation, the body that awards the recognition. No independent confirmation available — and for a literary prize the organizer is the primary source for its own selection, which covers the existence of the list but not the evaluation of the titles, which is not a verifiable matter.
Who is in it. The selection holds together two criteria that usually compete for space. On one hand, names already familiar to the prize: Marlon James and Douglas Stuart, both winners of previous editions, and Elizabeth Strout, a former finalist. On the other, the entry of ten authors who had never before appeared in this selection, of whom three are debut novelists.
The proportion is the interesting figure: the majority of the thirteen had never been chosen by the prize before, and some are on their first book. It is a ratio that says something about how the jury read the 163 submissions: not as a catalogue of careers to be confirmed.
Of the reading work the chair said: “It has been an extraordinary seven months” (transl. from English).

The dates that remain. The next step is set: the shortlist will be announced on September 22, 2026 at a public event at the Southbank Centre in London.
