What has changed since 6:30
The afternoon update covers six sections: World, Italy, Europe, Economy, Tech, Culture and Sport. On Iran no independent confirmation has arrived, and we say so.
This morning we led with an Iranian claim of attacks against American bases, publishing it for what it was: the statement of those claiming to have acted, without independent count and without an American version. At 16:30 that picture is identical. No denial, no confirmation, no toll. Those expecting a single day to close the matter will be disappointed: we do not close it.
What has arrived is something else, and of two different kinds. A political position — Donald Trump says he has no regrets about the decision to enter the war — and an administrative act, the sanctions from the American Treasury on networks in four countries. The second produces measurable effects, the first does not. The afternoon lead holds the two together but does not place them on the same level.
On the other sections, here is what is new. Italy: two pieces on the electoral reform approved in the Senate, the three preferences with blocked lead candidates and the elimination of the 3% threshold for the bonus, with signatures for new parties rising from 1,500 to 6,000. On the first of the two the news currently comes from a single source, and the piece states as much. Europe: Brussels in a single day, 6.1 billion for Ukrainian air defense and the passage in the Council on the agreement with India; and Magdeburg, where the AfD forms itself into a group and the BSW is the only party to accept talks. Economy and Markets: this morning crude oil above one hundred dollars, now TTF gas at 80.99 euros per megawatt-hour and annual BOTs at 2.967% — the energy price rise passing through to the cost of money. Tech & AI: OpenAI is considering slowing down its most advanced models, a Bloomberg reconstruction, single source declared. Culture: the Booker Prize selection, thirteen novels out of 163. Sport: the US Open sets semifinals and final. Plus the Briefs.
Cinema & Entertainment, Chronicles and Health remain with this morning’s pieces, published and readable on their pages. On Chronicles we had a piece on Qingdao and Ceuta in the works: it did not pass checks and we have not replaced it. The section carries its 6:30 article.
A morning assessment holds up: publishing the Iranian claim as a statement and not as fact. Nine hours later, there is still no second independent source.
