The day changed on the side of reactions, not attacks

This morning this newspaper opened on the Red Sea looking at the attack. In the afternoon the center of gravity shifted sideways: not to who strikes, but to who decides not to respond. Donald Trump, speaking from Ireland, ruled out on September 12 a US intervention against the Yemeni rebels — El País reports this, linking the statement to the closure of the East-West pipeline. A few hours later, the Saudi Foreign Ministry announced it would refrain from retaliation to leave room for the Iraqi investigation; the position is also reported by the Saudi Press Agency (Saudi state agency) and should be treated as such: an attributed statement, not an independently verified fact. On the ground, Iraqi security sources told AFP of drone launch ramps identified near the border with Iran.

This morning’s assessment holds on one point and needs correcting on another. The energy reading holds: the Petroline remains closed, and this is the figure weighing on flows. What does not hold is the implicit hypothesis of a near-term military escalation: today the two capitals that could have opened it both said no, each for their own reasons.
