Six sections uncovered, and the reason must be stated in full

I will start with the uncomfortable part. Rule 13 of this newspaper requires the morning edition to carry one article for each of the ten sections. Today I am delivering four. Chronicles, Culture, Economy and Markets, Italy, Health and Tech & AI remain without a piece. I have no elegant explanation: today’s dossier did not produce, for these six sections, stories that together met the threshold of independent sourcing and verifiability required by the statute. On Health the threshold is the strictest in the newspaper and doubt is resolved by not publishing; on the other five the result simply fell short. The next edition comes out today at 16:30 and there I will recover what can be recovered.

One case deserves to be named in full. I had a piece in the works on a derailment in Normandy, with forty-four injured on a train carrying one hundred and eighty-six passengers. It was discarded during verification and not replaced: Chronicles remains uncovered. I prefer an empty section to a figure that does not hold up under scrutiny, because a wrong number of injured is the kind of error that then drags on for weeks.

What is published, is published in this hierarchy. Leading the edition is the eighteenth BRICS summit, closed in New Delhi on September 12 with acceptance of the Final Declaration by all members, and the meeting between Modi and Xi on the sidelines. I flag the limit, because it matters: the text of the document is not among our sources. We report the act — the acceptance — not the substance. Anyone looking here for what the Declaration says on trade or institutions will not find it, and not out of reticence.

Then Ceuta, where on September 12 a fire that struck 42 shacks at Tarajal, more than one hundred shelters counted on Benítez beach, and the resignation of a chief of staff all come together. It is the kind of story in which the material fact and the political one explain each other. Next, the closing of Venice 83, with the Golden Lion going to “Woman Unknown” by May el-Toukhy, and the first starting grid of the Madring, with Norris ahead of Antonelli by eleven thousandths.

The Briefs add to the coverage and do not replace it: none of the six uncovered sections should be considered covered because it appears in an item. Today’s Blind Spot looks at the hydrocarbon leak discovered on September 10 at the Cantarell field, in the Gulf of Mexico, with Pemex stating that valves are closed and there is no damage to beaches or personnel: this is the part of the account that depends on the company, and we have treated it as such.
