The afternoon shifts the center of gravity: from the Gulf to Washington, and markets await the Fed
Nine updates since 6:30: Iranian oil, bonds, an Indonesian shipwreck, the European Parliament, the epidemic in DR Congo. The sections not touched remain those from the morning, published and readable.
At 6:30 we had opened with the postponement, without a new date, of the summit between Iran and Gulf countries convened by Oman in Salalah. That fact still stands: the sultanate confirmed today the slippage, and Iranian officials reiterated it. But the focus of the day has shifted elsewhere. US President Donald Trump said the United States could remain in Iran and “keep the oil” (transl. from English), and asked Kyiv to suspend attacks on Russian refineries. This is a change of register in the stated objective of the military operation, and it opens the edition.
On the markets, the morning’s assessment needs correcting in direction, not in subject: we had written about the Fed deciding on Wednesday, but today’s session was not a neutral wait. Kospi at −3.26%, Nasdaq futures down more than one percentage point, and above all the yield on the French ten-year OAT at 4.46%. The movement on debt matters more than the one on equities.
The sections updated in this edition are nine. Foreign Affairs and Geopolitics with the opening on oil. Economy and Markets with the pre-Fed session. News with the capsized ferry in the Java Sea: 129 missing, 655 rescuers, figures from an operation still underway, not a closed toll. Cinema & Entertainment with the requests from two Israeli ministers for measures against the directors of the documentary awarded in Venice — the morning had reported on the awards, the afternoon reports on the political reaction. Health with the ECDC update on the Bundibugyo epidemic in DR Congo: 7,200 confirmed cases and 3,475 deaths as of September 12, up from September 11. Europe with the calendar of the Strasbourg plenary, which is a work program, not an outcome. Tech & AI with Dario Amodei’s call for a slowdown and the political refusal opposed by Trump: his six-to-twelve-month forecast is the assessment of a company executive, not experimental data, and we treat it as such. Italy with two pieces — the Senate approving articles 1 and 5 of the electoral law and postponing the final vote to tomorrow, and the twenty-four-hour strike at the former Ilva contract site in Taranto. Plus the Briefs.
Culture and Sports remain covered by the 6:30 pieces, which are published and can be found on the front page and in their respective sections. No section is uncovered today.
The paper returns tomorrow morning at 6:30. Already on the agenda: the Senate’s final vote on the electoral law, expected in the morning.
