The collapsed building in Gaza City, as told by seven newsrooms in six languages

A six-storey building in Gaza City, already damaged by a previous Israeli airstrike, collapsed while housing displaced families who had taken shelter there. The death toll, still being updated at the time of writing, stands at at least 20 dead according to the sources, with the Civil Defence spokesman saying nearly a hundred people remain missing under the rubble. Gaza’s Civil Defence is the primary source cited by almost all the newsrooms consulted.

The map of narratives. Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based broadcaster, builds its piece around the voice of local authorities: it reports the higher figure of people still missing, nearly a hundred according to Civil Defence spokesman Mahmoud Basal, and gives space to the mayor of Gaza City, who acknowledges the inadequacy of resources: “This is not the first building collapse and we fear it will not be the last.”

The Agence France Presse, picked up by Canada’s Noovo Info, focuses on structural responsibility: it cites the Gaza press office, according to which the building had been “directly targeted” during the war, which would have compromised its structural integrity.

ANSA, itself relaying wire dispatches, sticks to the technical data: a structure damaged during the conflict, inhabited by displaced people, a death toll of 20 — an essential account with no elaboration on the political causes of the damage.

Argentina’s Infobae reports the same toll of 20 victims, attributing it to Gaza’s Civil Defence. Brazil’s Jovem Pan covers the news in a similar manner, with the same institutional attribution and no independent elements on the causes of the collapse.

Germany’s ZDFheute is the only one, among those examined, to specify in its own attribution that the source cited is the “Zivilschutz Gaza (Hamas-kontrolliert),” Gaza’s Civil Defence, which is controlled by Hamas. It nonetheless reports the words of its head, Raed al-Dahshan: “We can still hear voices under the rubble” (transl. from German).

The Arabic site a5r5br.net draws directly on the same Civil Defence, الدفاع المدني في غزة, without further qualification regarding the nature of the body, in line with the practice of the other non-German outlets.

What emerges from the comparison. All the sources examined rely, directly or through the AFP, EFE and dpa news agencies, on the same primary origin: Gaza’s Civil Defence. ZDFheute is the only one to specify its control by Hamas in its own attribution; the others do not. The reported toll converges on at least 20 dead across all the outlets examined, with the number of missing given only by Al Jazeera. Only Al Jazeera places the collapse within the broader context of around two thousand buildings at risk flagged by the Civil Defence, while the other outlets treat the episode as an isolated event.
