Serie A, three teams level at the top; in Malaysia Verstappen leads
After five rounds of the Italian championship, Roma, Inter and Lazio are level at the top. In Formula 1 the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend opens at Sepang: in first practice the fastest is Max Verstappen.
At the end of the fifth round of Serie A, the Italian championship standings show three teams level at the top: Roma, Inter and Lazio lead with 13 points each, while Cagliari follow at 12. A start to the season that has not yet produced a team breaking away on its own, with the leading group compact after the first five matches played.
On the international front, the motorsport weekend opens in Malaysia, where the Sepang circuit hosts the Bahrain Grand Prix in place of the original venue. In the first free practice session, Max Verstappen, driving the Red Bull, set the reference time with 1:37.520, finishing 383 thousandths of a second ahead of George Russell’s Mercedes, second. The third-fastest time went to the other Red Bull team car, driven by Isack Hadjar.
The two stories remain separate in nature and context: on one hand the mid-October snapshot of the Italian championship, with three teams at the top and Cagliari close behind the group; on the other the start of the Formula 1 weekend in Asia, with Verstappen confirming himself as the timing benchmark in the first free practice session held on the Malaysian circuit, in a round that the calendar had to relocate from its original venue in Bahrain.
For Serie A, the most immediate data point remains the minimal gap between the top four positions in the standings — just one point separates the leading trio from Cagliari — which describes a championship still wide open after a fifth of the scheduled matches. None of the three leaders has so far managed to pull away from the other two, and Cagliari’s fourth place, just one point behind, keeps the race open even near the top.
For Formula 1, Verstappen’s time in the first free practice session at Sepang offers an initial reference point ahead of the weekend’s qualifying, with Russell and Hadjar completing the provisional timing podium. The 383-thousandths margin over the Mercedes and the presence of the second Red Bull in third position make up the opening picture of a weekend being contested on the Malaysian circuit while still retaining the name of the Bahrain Grand Prix.
