Bad weather, orange alert over Naples and Lazio: schools closed and flooding
An Atlantic weather system hits Central-Southern Italy: schools closed in several municipalities in the province of Naples and on the islands of the gulf, flooding between Anzio and Nettuno.
The orange weather alert remains in force until 3pm today over Naples, the Campanian Plain, the Vesuvian area and the islands of the gulf. The weather system, of Atlantic origin, prompted several municipal administrations to put in place precautionary measures even before the rain reached its peak intensity.
In Naples, city parks and outdoor sports facilities remained closed for the entire duration of the alert. The decision falls within the standard procedures set out in municipal civil protection plans in the presence of an orange code, designed to reduce exposure to fallen branches, structural collapses and sudden flooding in open-air public spaces.
School closures involved a large number of municipalities in the Naples province: among them Giugliano, Ercolano, Afragola, Torre del Greco, Portici, Calvizzano and Melito. The measure also affected the islands of the gulf, Capri and Ischia, and the municipality of Grazzanise, in the Caserta hinterland. The fragmentation of the orders — municipality by municipality, rather than a single regional provision — reflects the degree of autonomy mayors retain in managing weather alerts, based on the specific conditions of their own territory.
In Lazio, the weather system has already produced concrete effects. Between Anzio and Nettuno widespread flooding has been recorded, and in via Casal di Claudia a perimeter wall collapsed.
The situation describes a pattern typical of autumn weather systems moving up the Peninsula from the west: intense, concentrated rainfall that puts particular pressure on urban drainage networks and older retaining walls, with effects appearing in a patchy pattern depending on local drainage capacity.
The orange alert over Naples and the surrounding areas is nonetheless set to expire in the afternoon, while it remains to be seen whether local administrations will extend school closures for the coming days depending on how the forecasts evolve.
