Wall Street rises on OpenAI and falling oil, but Russian diesel does not lower Italian prices
The Dow Jones advances to 51,383 points, supported by optimism over OpenAI's revenues. Diesel futures fall nearly 5% after Trump's announcement on Russian gasoil, but pump prices in Italy remain above 2.25 euros.
Wall Street opened higher in the week’s final session, supported by a decline in oil and easing tensions on government bonds. The Dow Jones index gained 0.29%, surpassing the 51,300-point mark; the S&P 500 approached 7,800 points and the Nasdaq 100 rose by about half a percentage point. OpenAI’s revenue estimates reignited optimism over artificial intelligence, while European stock markets rose by more than 1%.
This is a development that had not been reported this morning, and it is intertwined with another front: following Trump’s announcement on Russian gasoil supplies, American diesel futures lost nearly 5%, according to Reuters data. Available sources report the announcement made by the United States; a bilateral agreement with Moscow has not been confirmed. The quantities cited — up to 4.8 million tonnes — correspond to roughly 35.8 million barrels, little more than a single day of global demand: a volume that explains why the market reaction was contained despite the emphasis of the announcement.
In Italy the effect on pump prices has not been felt: diesel remains above 2.25 euros per liter, and European sanctions on Russian diesel remain in force with no direct effects on Italian imports. The contrast between the drop in American futures and the stability of Italian prices measures the distance between an announcement and its actual impact on European supplies.
The combination of technological optimism on Wall Street and caution in energy markets thus defines a two-speed session, with equities looking at the revenue prospects of artificial intelligence companies and the oil market remaining anchored to the volumes actually available.
