Paris revises death toll upward, Saint Petersburg enters the edition
The afternoon update covers seven fronts opened since morning: France, Italian coverage of the marches, markets, global health, foreign affairs, Italian politics and culture. The other sections remain those from 6:30 am.
This edition updates seven sections compared to the morning: Foreign Affairs and Geopolitics, Europe, News, Economy and Markets, Health, Italy and Culture. Cinema & Entertainment, Sport and Tech & AI remain those published at 6:30 am, which readers can still find on the front page and in the section pages: they have not been touched because there were no developments to justify a new piece, not because they are missing.
The news the morning did not have: a drone attack on Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad oblast, with damage to the port’s oil terminal, to a VK data center and to other civilian infrastructure. Two independent Russian outlets — Fontanka and Meduza — covered the event, cross-confirming its main points.
On the French front, the morning’s assessment holds up in substance but the number changes: the count of detentions rises to two thousand, according to Interior Minister Nuñez as cited by Le Monde and by Le Parisien, and Macron has called a summit with the prime minister for 8 pm. This is an escalation, not a correction: the previous figure is not being refuted, it is being overtaken by events.
In Italy, the marches against the cost of living in Milan, Turin and Bologna ended in clashes and detentions, around fifty in Milan. Our editorial policy requires that minors involved not be made identifiable, even when news agencies report their presence among those detained: the News section reports the facts without elements that would allow them to be traced.
On the markets, Piazza Affari closed higher while the Nasdaq had a negative week: the figure comes from a single source, Il Sole 24 Ore, and we state this without independent confirmation currently available.
In Health, the WHO has updated the figures on the Bundibugyo virus epidemic in Congo: 8,728 cases, 4,205 deaths, one case exported to Kenya. These are new figures compared to what has been published so far, not a revision of a previous figure of ours.
The edition closes with remarks by Giorgia Meloni at the Niaf on Columbus Day and on Italy-US relations, and a Culture piece on the Keith Haring retrospective at Palazzo Braschi, open until April 11, 2027.
Tomorrow’s 6:30 am edition returns to covering all ten sections.
