OpenAI speeds up $30 billion fundraising ahead of IPO
The company is targeting a valuation of over $1.4 trillion ahead of a possible stock market debut in 2027, while a $20 billion discrepancy between two revenue estimates fuels doubts about the sector's accounts.
OpenAI is speeding up a private fundraising round of around $30 billion to secure commitments from investors ahead of a possible stock market debut. The deal would push the company’s valuation above $1.4 trillion, according to a reconstruction by TechPost.it, which cites an analysis based on financial sources. The reports place a possible stock market listing in 2027.
At the same time, a $20 billion gap between two estimates of the company’s annualized revenue has rattled markets. According to the analysis by Agenda Digitale, the forecast for all of 2026 stands at around $36 billion, a figure markedly lower than the $50-70 billion in annualized revenue that had previously been discussed.
The dual set of figures — a record fundraising round on one side, a downward revision of revenue estimates on the other — captures the tension running through the artificial intelligence sector: investors continue to bet on rising valuations, while analysts point to inconsistencies in the figures circulating about the actual revenues of leading companies. The two sources do not contradict one another, but describe two different planes: that of funding intentions and that of verifiable accounting.
It remains to be seen how the two dynamics will be reconciled in the coming months. A valuation exceeding $1.4 trillion presupposes revenue consistent with that figure, while the more cautious estimates place the company on a different growth trajectory than the one implied by the ongoing fundraising. The gap between the two numbers — $30 billion raised against a revenue projection of $36 billion for 2026 — is the point that industry observers will continue to monitor.
The sources consulted do not currently provide definitive details on the structure of the $30 billion deal, nor a precise date for the possible listing.
