Peace discussed, war that continues
Saint Petersburg opens the edition while a nighttime attack kills civilians in Ukraine. The rest of the edition covers all ten sections, from the Italian security decree to the global shortage of healthcare workers.
We open with the distance between words and facts. In Saint Petersburg a peace plan for Ukraine is being discussed, while overnight a Russian drone attack hit a public park in Ukraine, killing six people, including two children. The US president called Russia’s conduct in the conflict “fine”. We chose this story as our opening because the contradiction between the diplomatic table and the ground is the most relevant political fact of the day, not because it offers a solution.
In Analysis the hierarchy reflects three distinct levels. The Italian domestic level, with the security decree passed by the government after the clashes and the split that emerged between Crosetto and Salvini. The European level, with France imposing a curfew after the violence of October 17 and Spain updating to five the death toll from storm Adam — a figure which, as this is an ongoing news story, remains the most recent verifiable one and may be revised. The economic-technological level, with OpenAI’s race toward a valuation above $1,400 billion and Anthropic’s accounting losses ahead of its listing, losses that — as we explain in the piece — are largely non-monetary adjustments and not a sign of operational crisis.
No section is missing today. Culture finds space with the resurfacing of a district of Akragas in Agrigento, destroyed in the Carthaginian siege of 406 BC, and with the strike that cancelled the premiere of Faust at La Scala. Sport covers the Champions League with a global reach: Napoli and Roma win, PSG overwhelms Barcelona in Paris. On that same match, today’s Controluce compares two ways of recounting an identical 4-2, without putting either outlet on trial. Health hosts the WHO’s warning about a shortage of 11 million healthcare workers by 2030, a structural figure rather than a sudden emergency.
Open questions remain, which we will keep an eye on. The death toll from storm Adam in Spain is an ongoing news figure, subject to update in the coming hours. On the Italian security decree, the split within the majority deserves a more measured reading than the day of approval allows. On peace in Saint Petersburg, the distance between the tones of diplomacy and those of the field remains, as of today, the most solid fact we have.
Updates on these stories are scheduled for 4:30 PM.
