OpenAI brings its models to Google Cloud
An agreement between OpenAI and Google Cloud makes the company's models available through the Model Garden catalog: Google thus becomes the first major cloud provider to host Gemini, Claude and GPT together.
OpenAI and Google Cloud announced on October 21 an agreement to distribute OpenAI’s models through Google Cloud’s Model Garden catalog. The news currently comes from a single source - the joint statements from the two companies - and no further independent confirmation is available regarding the commercial terms of the deal.
The agreement begins with a private preview reserved for a select group of enterprises, with a general rollout expected in the coming weeks, though no precise date has been given. Businesses will be able to purchase OpenAI’s models through Google Cloud Marketplace using the cloud spending commitments already agreed with Google.
With the arrival of OpenAI’s models alongside Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude in the same catalog, Google becomes the first major cloud infrastructure provider to simultaneously host all three leading closed-source artificial intelligence models currently on the market. This represents a shift in positioning for Google, which until this agreement offered in its catalog mainly its internally developed models alongside Anthropic’s, without including the products of its main direct competitor in the large language model sector.
OpenAI has clarified that Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner, and that the agreement with Google does not replace that relationship. The deal is therefore framed as an expansion of the commercial distribution of OpenAI’s models, not as a replacement of existing relationships with other infrastructure providers. For enterprise customers of Google Cloud, the main novelty concerns the ability to access OpenAI’s models without having to manage a separate contract, using the spending commitments already agreed with the cloud provider.
It remains to be seen, in the coming weeks, when the private preview will give way to the general availability announced by the two companies.
