Farmers and road hauliers at Montecitorio against rising diesel prices
A protest by the two sectors arrived in front of Parliament in Rome; a meeting with the Government is scheduled for the afternoon at the Ministry of Transport.
On Tuesday, October 27, a procession of farmers and road hauliers reached Montecitorio, in Rome, to protest against rising diesel and production costs. The protest stems from the overlap of two sectoral crises that, while affecting different categories, share the same immediate cause: the rise in fuel prices, which weighs on the budgets of farming businesses as much as on those of freight transport companies.
For road hauliers, fuel represents one of the most significant expense items in the structure of operating costs, and an increase translates into reduced margins on contracts that are often already tight. For the agricultural sector, diesel affects costs both directly, in mechanized operations, and indirectly, through the cost of the transport needed to get products to market. The convergence of the two protests into a single demonstration in front of Parliament thus signals simultaneous pressure on different but interdependent supply chains.
The demonstration was followed, in the afternoon, by a meeting at the Ministry of Transport between representatives of the two categories and the Government. It remains to be seen what responses, if any, will emerge from that meeting regarding the demands of the two sectors.
This is not the first time the issue of rising fuel costs has brought Italian production categories into the streets: it is a recurring tension, linked to the trend of international energy prices rather than to domestic policy choices, but one that finds in public demonstrations the way it translates into concrete demands directed at the Government.
It should be noted that, at this time, the news comes from a single source (LaC News24); no independent confirmation is currently available. The sources consulted have not disclosed either the number of participants in the demonstration or the outcomes of the afternoon meeting at the Ministry of Transport.
The demands of the two categories remain for now without public response: the outcome of the meeting at the Ministry of Transport has not yet been announced.
