Champions League, matchday four overturns predictions and scorelines
Real Madrid come from behind to beat AEK Athens in the 92nd minute, Liverpool fall in Istanbul, Como thrash Lens 9-1 while Napoli go down to defeat in Porto.
Matchday four of the Champions League League Phase has produced a series of results that reshape the competition’s provisional hierarchy. The most sensational case concerns Real Madrid, who found themselves two goals down against AEK in Athens before completing a comeback finished off by Valverde’s goal in the 92nd minute. The match ended 3-2 for the Madrid side, at the end of a game that the Spanish team risked not controlling until the very end.
On the same evening Liverpool suffered a defeat that is heavy in symbolic terms, going down 3-2 away to Fenerbahçe in Istanbul: Muriqi’s goal in the 88th minute proved decisive, arriving when the result seemed to be heading in a different direction. It is one of the most surprising results of the round, given the English side’s historical weight in this competition.
Manchester City, on the other hand, confirmed a strong run of form by winning 3-2 away to Leipzig, in a match that saw Haaland among the attacking protagonists. Among the other results of the day, Borussia Dortmund beat Real Betis 2-1, while Arsenal won 2-1 against Slavia Praga. A round, then, in which almost all the matches mentioned were decided by a single goal, a sign of the widespread balance in the competition’s single league phase.
The fortunes of the two Italian sides involved in the round were different. Napoli lost 4-1 away to Porto, a heavy margin that weighs on the Naples side’s European campaign in this edition of the competition. On the opposite front, Como delivered one of the most surprising performances of the entire round, winning 9-1 away to Lens: a result notable for the scale of the gap, unusual even in the context of a European cup accustomed to significant margins.
Matchday four thus confirms a trend accompanying this edition of the League Phase: the distance between traditional top-tier sides and the so-called outsiders is narrowing less than expected, with episodes such as Real Madrid’s comeback or Liverpool’s collapse pointing to less predictable balances compared to the past. The Como-Lens case, however, remains an isolated one in terms of the scoreline, ranking among the widest winning margins recorded in the ongoing tournament.
The results of this round, reported in the UEFA match coverage, make up a provisional picture of the League Phase standings, which will continue in the coming weeks with new rounds and new possible upsets in the race for qualification.
