Potenza, Musmeci bridge closed after falling debris
The Municipality ordered the closure to vehicle traffic of the infrastructure symbolizing the city, following a report from the Fire Brigade; alternative routes and maintenance works are planned.
The Municipality of Potenza has ordered the closure to vehicle traffic of the Musmeci Bridge, one of the main access points to the city. The measure, according to ANSA, was adopted on Friday, November 6, at 10:54, following a communication from the Fire Brigade regarding the falling of debris from the structure.
The bridge represents a crucial infrastructure for traffic entering and leaving the city, and its closure has direct consequences on urban mobility. For this reason, alternative routes have been activated: according to La Siritide, those who need to reach the motorway junction can use the Potenza Est and Potenza Ovest exits, bypassing the stretch affected by the measure.
The Musmeci Bridge was inaugurated in 1976 and, according to the information gathered, maintenance, consolidation and restoration works are planned on the structure. No deadline for reopening to traffic is specified in the available material, nor is the exact extent of the damage found by the Fire Brigade at the time of the inspection.
The closure comes at a moment when the infrastructure, described as a symbol of the city of Potenza, returns to the center of attention not for its architectural history but for an immediate safety issue. The bridge, designed by engineer Sergio Musmeci and over time become a recognized landmark of the city’s engineering, connects residential areas and traffic routes that must now divert onto the paths indicated by the Municipality.
It remains to be seen, in the coming days, whether the ongoing technical inspection will lead to a swift intervention or a prolonged closure. In the meantime, the alternative routes indicated by local authorities remain the only option for traffic heading to the motorway junction, while no further details have been made available, at this time, regarding the timing of the structural inspections underway on the span.
