A president arrested, trembling markets, an empty section
Why we lead with Paraguay, what remains unresolved between Anac and the stock exchanges, and why there is no Sport section today.
Paraguay’s Senate voted 44 to 0 to remove President Santiago Peña and, within hours, the former head of state was placed under house arrest. We lead with this story because it combines three elements rarely seen together: a banking crisis, a lightning-fast impeachment, and a president who resigns one day before being removed anyway. This is the kind of event that redraws a country’s balance of power in real time, and we are treating it as our global lead, not as a foreign news brief.
On the rest of today’s hierarchy, a few choices deserve a word. Trifone Altieri’s withdrawal from the race for Anac comes twenty-four hours after the Council of Ministers’ resolution: we are following it because it concerns the functioning of a regulatory authority, not the individuals involved. On the markets, Wall Street’s collapse and the red day on European exchanges remain — as we state in the piece — anchored for now to a single journalistic source for the more detailed data; the direction of the movement is nonetheless confirmed by the trend in Asian semiconductor indices. The same caution applies to the fire at the Messina Chamber of Commerce and to the three archaeological discoveries of the week: genuine news, single stated origin, no independent confirmation at this time.
Among the Good News, the 36% drop in primary tropical forest loss in 2025 comes from a research body independent of Brazil, the main beneficiary of the data: the third-party confirmation the column requires is there, and it is the condition for the piece to exist.
One section remains uncovered today: Sport. The only available item — the announcement of Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement from the Portuguese national team — did not withstand verifiability checks and was not replaced in time for this edition. We do not force a section with material that fails to meet the threshold: we run shorter, as planned, rather than fill the space.
This afternoon’s update will cover any real developments — starting with Paraguay and the markets — and will return to Sport if a verifiable story emerges in the meantime.
