Russian attack on Kyiv and Odesa: railway company hit in Darnytsia, one dead

The new development of the last few hours comes from Ukraine, and the paper did not have it this morning: during the night between Friday and Saturday, August 22, 2026, Russian forces carried out a combined attack — missiles and drones — on Kyiv, the region around the capital and the Odesa region. The target identified most precisely by Ukrainian sources is a railway company in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district, where, according to Ukrzaliznytsia head Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, an employee of the company died (MKE.ee).

The two versions, kept separate

The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that during the night, using ground-launched precision weapons and long-range drones, it struck a transport infrastructure target and a logistics center in Kyiv and the surrounding region. The same statement claims the destruction of military supply depots and fuel storage tanks at the ports of Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi, on the Odesa coast. The claim is reported by Lenta.ru and by RIA Novosti Krym (a Russian state agency): it therefore remains, as things stand, a statement from the party that carried out the attack, not an established fact. No independent verification of the military nature of the port targets is available.

On the Ukrainian side, the confirmations are of a different kind, concerning civilian and railway damage. The Air Force command indicated the main directions of the attack.

In the Odesa region the railway line was hit and at Rozdilna station the passenger building was damaged. Meduza, citing Ukrainian local authorities, reports casualties in Kyiv and in Zaporizhzhia. The overall number of dead and wounded, at the time of this article’s publication, has not been reported: the only death attributed with a name and institutional role is that of the railway worker in Darnytsia, reported by the head of the state company.

Why the railway

The overlap between the two versions is more informative than the discrepancies. Moscow says it targeted transport infrastructure and a logistics center; Kyiv confirms that a railway company in the capital was hit and that in another region tracks and a station were damaged. On one point, therefore, there is no dispute: the targets of the attack belong to the network used by passengers, freight and supplies.

Ukrzaliznytsia is the company that manages the network: its function is both civilian and strategic, because in a country with airspace closed to ordinary traffic, the railway is the main system of internal mobility and connection with the western borders. A damaged locomotive depot is not measured in meters of track, but in unavailable rolling stock and in delays that propagate across the entire network. The available material does not currently contain the extent of the delays or the list of suspended routes.

What we don’t know

Three gaps remain open, and it is worth stating them rather than filling them with estimates. First: the overall casualty toll, which Ukrainian authorities normally update in the following hours. Second: how many of the weapons used were intercepted — the sources cited provide no verifiable count of air defense results. Third: the actual damage at the ports of Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi, for which only the Russian ministry’s claim exists.

One element on which the two versions agree remains: the geographic scope. The Ukrainian Air Force command indicates two main directions, the Kyiv region and the Odesa region, that is, the capital and the southwestern coast; the Russian ministry describes for the same night the combined use of ground-launched precision weapons and long-range drones, and the railway damage reported by Ukrainian sources appears in both areas. Distances, the number of vehicles used and interception data have not been reported by either side at this time.
