Schengen with Spain, government extends checks for another fifteen days

The decision has arrived: the Ministry of the Interior has announced the extension for another fifteen days of the checks at air and sea borders for travelers arriving from the Iberian country.

The factual picture, as reported by the Viminale statement carried by Open and by reports from Il Foglio and Euronews Italia, is as follows: the checks had been introduced on August 1, 2026 following the migration crisis in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta, were set to expire on August 31, and now continue for a further two-week period. The government states that the notification communicating the extension to the European Union is in progress. Confirmation also came via the Adnkronos news agency.

On the internal procedure the ministry provides a precise reference: the choice was made, the statement reads, “in line with the analysis carried out by the Immigration Analysis Committee” and border security. This is the only investigative element made public: the released text contains no numerical assessment of arrivals, nor a summary of the checks carried out during the month of August.

The bilateral step

The second new element of the afternoon concerns relations with Madrid. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi communicated Italy’s assessments to his Spanish counterpart Fernando Grande-Marlaska in a phone call. This is not a formal step required by any procedure, but a choice of method: the measure concerns travelers departing from another member state, and advance notice serves to avoid having the extension arrive as a wire-service news item.

On the Spanish side the government is moving in parallel, but on a different track: Madrid’s Interior Minister has asked the European Union for Frontex support to strengthen border control in Ceuta. These are two responses to the same fact that go in different directions — one toward the restoration of internal checks, the other toward the reinforcement of the external border — and the second goes through Brussels, while the first is a national decision that is notified to Brussels.

What changes is the status of the measure: from a provision about to expire to a provision extended. Its legal nature does not change, remaining that of a temporary suspension of fixed duration, the second after that of August 1. With a fifteen-day extension the deadline falls in mid-September; the available sources do not indicate whether a further renewal is planned or what conditions would determine its end.
