Taranto, Italy at 187 medals two days before the closing of the Mediterranean Games
Sixty-three gold, 65 silver and 59 bronze as of September 1: seven podiums short of the Bari 1997 record, with two days of competition still to go. The event closes on September 3.
At the XX Mediterranean Games, under way in Taranto from August 21 to September 3 across 32 disciplines, Italy has reached 187 medals: 63 gold, 65 silver and 59 bronze as of September 1. The tally is published by Carpi 2000.
The figure should be read against two historical benchmarks. The first is the Italian record, 193 podiums at Bari 1997: seven medals short, with two days of competition still on the schedule. The second has already been surpassed: the 186 of Mersin 2013.
A day with 34 titles
On September 1, 34 titles in all were awarded, with a concentrated distribution: nine gold medals in athletics, six in weightlifting, six in rowing. The live text coverage from the competition venues records, during the evening athletics session, the gold medals of Gianmarco Tamberi, Nick Ponzio and Erika Saraceni in the triple jump. In team sports, the women’s national handball team beat Tunisia 25-23 in the final, winning gold.
The fact that 34 titles are concentrated in a single day explains why the medal count can move by several units in a few hours, and why the gap to the 1997 record can be closed in two days. The XX Games factsheet, which draws on documentation from the International Committee of Mediterranean Games, places the event at 32 disciplines: a broad program, in which the number of finals available in the final days weighs more than the performance of any single athlete.
The value of the historical comparison
A comparison between different editions of the Games has a limit worth stating: the number of disciplines, events and participating countries changes from one edition to another, and with it the total number of medals available. A podium record does not measure only the strength of a delegation, it also measures the breadth of the program. This holds for the comparison with Bari 1997 as much as for the one with Mersin 2013: numbers comparable in form, less so in substance.
The fact remains: 187 podiums, and a margin of two days.
The rest of the sporting day
On September 2 at 19:00, in Brno, Czech Republic, Italy faces Sweden in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Volleyball European Championship; this is indicated by ANSA’s #AccadeOggi agenda, which notes on the same day the Coppa Italia round of 32 matches Sassuolo-Frosinone at 15:00 and Udinese-Venezia at 18:00.
Meanwhile, at Flushing Meadows the second round of the singles draws at the US Open continues, having begun on September 1. According to the official schedules of WTA and ATP, the main draw opened on August 30 and closes with the men’s final on September 13: eleven days of the tournament still ahead, while Taranto has two left.
What we don’t know
We do not know the number of finals scheduled for the two remaining days of the Games nor their breakdown by discipline: without that data, the seven-medal gap to the 1997 record cannot be translated into a probability. We do not have the medal table of the other participating countries. On the volleyball match, we do not have the head-to-head record between Italy and Sweden in this edition.
The nearest verifiable date is September 3, the closing day of Taranto 2026: on that date Italy’s final tally will be set.
