Taranto 2026: Italy reaches 196 medals and breaks the Bari 1997 record

During September 2nd Italy’s tally at the XX Mediterranean Games rose to 196 podiums — 66 gold, 69 silver, 61 bronze — surpassing the all-time record of 193 medals in a single edition, set at Bari 1997. The breakthrough is reported by TarantoToday, by Corriere di Taranto based on Italia Team data, and by Olympics.com, which relies on organizers’ data.
A note on the accounting: the total was updated event by event, and the two medals that triggered the record can be identified. Ivan Brunello’s silver and Niccolò Vannucchi’s bronze in men’s floor exercise were the 193rd and 194th, as also reported by Telenorba.
Where the latest podiums came from
The day rewarded three disciplines. In rowing, Italy won both lightweight double sculls: women’s gold for Elena Sali and Melissa Schincariol, men’s gold for Giovanni Borgonovo and Tito Christoforakis. In artistic gymnastics, alongside the men’s floor exercise, gold came in the women’s vault with Benedetta Gava, ahead of Greece’s Atanasia Mesiri and Slovenia’s Teja Belak. In weightlifting, Genna Toko Kegne earned a double silver in the up to 77 kilograms category, in the snatch and the clean and jerk.
September 1st, as reconstructed by the ANSA agency, had already delivered two significant results: Gianmarco Tamberi’s gold in the high jump with 2.25 meters at the Giuseppe Valente stadium in Taranto, with the bronze going to Cristiano Falocchi, and the 25-23 women’s handball win over Tunisia in the Fasano final — Italy’s first gold in the discipline since Latakia 1987.
Why the number got there
Two conditions explain the size of the haul, and they need to be stated so as not to confuse the record with a competitive leap forward. The first is participation: 26 National Olympic Committees take part in the Games, and Italy fields the largest delegation, 497 athletes — 259 men and 238 women. The second is the venue: the edition runs from August 21st to September 3rd across fourteen cities in Puglia, spread between Taranto, Bari, Brindisi and Lecce.
An honest historical comparison must also take this into account: Bari 1997, the record that fell today, was also a home edition. The comparison therefore holds between two similar situations, not between an away performance and a home one.

What we don’t know
The total is not final: competitions end on September 3rd and the number may still rise. We do not know the number of finals still scheduled on the last day, nor the breakdown of the medal table among the other participating Committees: the available sources report the Italian count, not the full standings. The consolidated figure will be the one published by the organizers once the Games have concluded.
