Fire on the Monti Lattari brought under control, Amalfi state road reopens

On September 15, 2026, a fire front of more than three kilometers that had affected the Monti Lattari, in the area between Vico Equense, Agerola and the Amalfi Coast, was brought under control. With the flames extinguished, State Road 163 Amalfitana reopened in the stretch between kilometer 6,000 and kilometer 8,500, between Piano di Sorrento and Vico Equense, which had remained closed during the emergency.

During the operation, a hospitality facility was evacuated as a precaution. The flames came close to homes in the municipality of Agerola. The coordination of operations involved Canadair planes and helicopters from the aerial firefighting fleet, together with firefighter crews on the ground, the regional Civil Protection department and Anas, the latter engaged in traffic management and the subsequent reopening of the road stretch affected by the emergency.

There is, at present, no definitive determination regarding the causes of the fire. According to reports by RaiNews and la Repubblica Napoli, the mayors of Amalfi and Positano, together with the Legambiente association, consider an arson-related lead plausible; the same sources note, however, that the causes remain under investigation by the competent authorities and that no official hypothesis has been made public.

The episode follows another fire that, during the night between September 12 and 13, affected the San Pietro a Positano area, with falling boulders that temporarily blocked the area’s main road link: an episode distinct, in location and dynamics, from the one on the Monti Lattari described here, and reported by this newspaper in its September 13 edition.

At present, State Road 163 is passable along the reopened stretch between Piano di Sorrento and Vico Equense, while any further reopenings or remaining restrictions along the route have yet to be confirmed, as they were not specified by the sources available at the time of publication.
