World Mental Health Day, WHO calls for listening to those experiencing distress
The theme chosen for 2026 focuses on the direct involvement of people with lived experience of psychological distress. In Italy, only 4 out of 10 Community Houses offer dedicated support.
The news currently comes from a single source (ANSA, citing data from the World Health Organization and the Istituto Superiore di Sanità); no independent confirmation is available. It is a story that the morning had not reported.
For 2026, the World Health Organization has chosen the theme “Listening to lived experiences: real voices, real change” for World Mental Health Day, which falls on October 10. The theme focuses on the direct involvement of people living with psychological distress in shaping health policies, rather than simply treating them as passive recipients of services.
In Italy, according to data released for the day, about 8 million people suffer from disorders ranging from anxiety to more severe conditions. Globally, the WHO reports that only one country out of eleven has completed the transition from institutional psychiatric care to community-based models, while more than half of countries, 53%, are still in the early stages of this transition process. In Italy, only 4 out of 10 Community Houses offer dedicated mental health support, a figure that reflects the gap between the model indicated by the WHO and the existing local network in the country.
The picture described concerns health policies and epidemiological data, not the health conditions of identifiable individuals: the figures released for the day refer to population estimates and the system’s capacity to provide care, not to individual cases. It remains to be seen how individual Regions intend to bridge the gap between Community Houses already active and those still lacking a dedicated mental health service, an issue that the WHO itself identifies as a priority for the coming years of health planning.
The gap between the community-based model indicated by the WHO and the current coverage of Italy’s Community Houses remains, for now, the most concrete indicator released for the day.
