Kharg, Iranian agencies report tanker hit at anchor

The new development of September 5, 2026 comes from Iranian agencies. According to the Tasnim agency, four projectiles reportedly struck a small Iranian tanker anchored in the fonding area off Kharg island: no casualties reported, crew being evacuated. The attribution of the strike to US forces comes from Iranian media, not from an official source.

The accounts given by Iranian agencies differ on the details. The Mehr agency places the vessel about six miles from the island. The Asr Iran website states that the ship was hit while unloading operations were under way. The Fars agency reports that one of its correspondents heard several blasts in the Persian Gulf, without however observing smoke. The type of projectile, the origin of the fire and the identity of the ship are not reported consistently.

Institutional confirmation is lacking. At the time of the first reports, no official statements had been made either by Iran or by the United States on the episode: neither a confirmation from Tehran, nor a denial or an operational update from the American command. The reconstruction, therefore, rests entirely on Iranian media; the international outlets that picked it up — Euronews, The Week, Shabtab News, il Giornale — report that same origin. Translated into this newspaper’s criteria: the chain of pickups does not multiply the sources, and the strike remains, for now, an attributed claim, not an independently verified fact.

The location explains why the episode matters more than its material scale. Kharg is where most of the crude oil Tehran sells abroad is shipped from: the terminal is credited with an estimated 90 to 95% share of the country’s oil exports. The fonding area off the island is not just any stretch of sea: it is the point where oil moves from pipelines onto ships. That the reported target was a small tanker, and not an onshore facility or loading arm, marks the difference between a contained incident and a blow to export capacity. On this distinction, at present, there are no official elements.

The episode comes one day after the launch, also reported by Iranian media, of anti-ship missiles against vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, with no indication of targets or damage. In that case too the source of the information was the same, and in that case too third-party confirmation was lacking: two consecutive reports describing an expansion of the naval theater from the Strait to the waters off the oil terminal, both however still at the stage of claims.

Three verifiable questions remain open, and they will shape the continuation of this story: whether the US command will confirm or deny an action in the Kharg area; whether Iranian authorities will provide the name, flag and damage status of the ship; whether loading operations at the terminal have been interrupted. Until any of these answers comes from an institutional source or one independent of Iranian agencies, what has been published today remains what those agencies report.
